COBRAE LAUNCHES A NEW EUROPEAN PROJECT
EUROPEAN COMPOSITE BRIDGES INITIATIVE |
|
| The COBRAE Members Meeting on the 21st of November in Rotterdam, NL decided to launch a new European Initiative to increase the awareness of composite structural materials within the European Civil Engineering community. This project has the aim to connect a number of European Road and Bridges Authorities by interconnecting a number of national structural composite engineering projects and exchanging information and know-how between the partners. A special budget over 2003 and 2004 will be made available by Members to enable this project to be implemented. The COBRAE Members decided that two area's of composite civil engineering applications will be pre-selected for participating in the programme: A. Design and construction of a bridge with composite deck. B. Design and construct the strengthening of an existing bridge structure with composites. Through interaction and exchange of experiences by the participants a full insight can be obtained into the added values of the introduction of this new engineering material and different variants can be tested simultaneously giving conclusive information about engineering data, economics and environmental advantages. COBRAE will call for a meeting on March 26th. 2003, Hotel New York, Rotterdam, NL, of all European Road Authorities and ask them to participate in this programme by selecting a project in their territory to design and construct a composite bridge deck for a given project type. An invitation is under preparation and will be issued early January to all major European Road Authorities. Different Project Types can be selected: A. NEW COMPOSITE BRIDGE STRUCTURE - Fixed bridge on composite girders (in place ASSET project, Oxford, UK) - Fixed bridge deck on steel girders - Fixed bridge deck on concrete girders - Draw bridge on steel girders - Lift bridge on steel girders B. STRENTHENING EXISTING BRIDGE STRUCTURE WITH COMPOSITES - Beam reinforcement - Deck reinforcement - Column reinforcement - Combinations of the above Also various climatic conditions, traffic loading and service requirements can be included into the test programme. Each bridge structure being put in place or strengthening project, shall be monitored and kept under constant scrutiny for a minimum period of 5 years. All projects shall be subject of site visits of the other parties, either during construction, installation or commissioning. After the commissioning of the last project a full international conference shall be conducted to evaluate the experiences of each of the participants. Two more monitoring meetings will be arranged in the next 3-5 years. Benefits What benefits can be expected from this project? - Experience with composite materials by National Road Authorities - Exchange of ideas between participants - The element of "International competition" encourages new ideas - Publicity by technical- and other press - Know-how of the material and application increases for all participating. - Perhaps the project may qualify for a European subsidy Interested? Parties, who wish to indicate their interest at this stage, or who know of projects in the planning phase, may contact the COBRAE office already now. Next issue of COBRAE News will list the interested parties and projects named. COBRAE News will permanent update all readers on the progress made in the initiative. |
